Muskrat


FOOD
Muskrats eat things that live in the water. They eat the roots and leaves of water plants.
They eat seafood like small fish and crayfish.
They also eat things that live near the water, like frogs and salamanders.


ENEMIES
Mink, raccoons, foxes and coyotes all
eat muskrats.
Owls and hawks grab them from above.
In the water, snapping turtles sometimes catch them.


WHERE THEY LIVE
Muskrats live near water.
They live in swamps, and on the shores of ponds, streams, and rivers.

* Muskrats are great builders. They dig tunnels. They build lodges. People sometimes get them mixed up with beavers.
* Muskrat feet are a little webbed. This helps them swim. They are very good swimmers and divers. A muskrat can stay underwater for more than 10 minutes.
* Muskrats rest during the day and come out at night.
